Aside from increasing one’s lifespan, happily married people tend to reap numerous health benefits from the union’s stability. According to a study conducted by British researchers, men and women benefit differently from a married lifestyle. Marriage, on the other hand, improves life.
Marriage has been shown to improve husbands’ physical health and wives’ mental health. The study, which was published in the British Medical Journal, emphasizes that positive results were found among happily married people.
It’s worth noting that the study also found that single people have better mental health than people in bad marriages.
Teenage romances were found to increase symptoms of depression among the demographic, suggesting that some romantic relationships may cause more harm than good. Those symptoms, however, tend to fade with age, with researchers discovering that 18 to 25-year-olds report better mental – but not physical – benefits when in a committed relationship.
According to authors David and John Gallacher, long-term relationships benefit men because they often force them to adopt healthier lifestyles, whereas “the mental bonus for women may be due to a greater emphasis on the importance of the relationship.”
According to the New York Times, doctors have been researching the benefits of a strong marriage for more than a century, with various scientists discovering that married people are less likely to develop pneumonia, certain cancers, and dementia. Some people are even less likely to suffer a heart attack.
According to several studies, troubled marriages are high-stress situations that can cause far more health problems than if the couple were single.
Although happily married people have many health benefits, getting married is not the solution to your health problems. Keeping this in mind, leading a healthier lifestyle can help you save money on your health and life insurance premiums.
True love can always conquer more than we realize. And perhaps this Valentine’s Day, get married and reap the health benefits.
