This Memorial day weekend typically begins the summer vacation season. That means more drivers on the roadways. According to National Highway Traffic and Safety Association, in 2012 there were 377 crash-related fatalities during the Memorial Day weekend. The following tips will help remind you to drive safely.
Make sure you car has been checked for appropriate fluid levels including your oil and brakes.
Check your tire’s air pressure and tread. Make sure that your spare tire is in working order.
DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE. According to NHTSA, every 51 minutes, someone in the US dies in an alcohol-impaired driving crash.
DO NOT TEXT AND DRIVE. In 2011, at least 23% of auto collisions involved cell phones.
Make sure your children are safe in their car seats and that they are installed correctly. Do not leave your children unattended in a vehicle even at rest stops when the child may be sleeping.
All children 13 and younger should ride in the backseat.
All passengers must be buckled up.
Always stop for pedestrians at a crosswalk.
Make sure your vehicle has an emergency kit that includes a working cell phone, first-aid materials, flashlight, flares, flags, jumper cables, jack for a tire change, drinkable water, nonperishable food, duct tape and blankets.
