Children Need To Be Taught To Respect

Children must be taught to respect because they cannot be expected to know it otherwise. Children raised without good manners are more likely to develop poor societal cues and struggle to thrive in society.

Introducing children to the value of respect and appreciation for others is a worthwhile endeavor. The following are some ideas for encouraging your children:

  • Make holiday crafts or cards for a nursing home in your community. Introduce your children to elderly relatives in assisted living or nursing homes as early as possible.
  • If your child is a budding musician, inquire with the activity director at an eldercare facility about practicing in front of an audience.
  • Allow your child to select an old doll or toy to donate to a worthy cause. This will not only teach your child to appreciate their blessings but also to appreciate those who are less fortunate.
  • With your children in tow, volunteer at a homeless shelter or soup kitchen. Always include them in the process.
  • Make a holiday art fair with your children’s favorite artwork and invite neighborhood kids to participate. Give out prizes to the kids and sell their artwork, donating the proceeds to a charity.
  • Bring your kids to a formal dinner or restaurant. Show them how to place a linen napkin on their lap and how to use the proper tableware. Put on your costume. If your children have difficulty sitting quietly, spend only enough time there for a quick meal or appetizers.

This is also an excellent time to teach your children, as they meet new people, how to address new acquaintances with the preferred greeting, whether Mr. or Mrs., as well as other salutations you deem appropriate.

Aside from helping your children’s social skills, this is a great time of year to give them the gift of life insurance. It is a gift that can provide your child with a bright future, including a college education. Gerber Life Insurance has a newsletter where you can get more tips on how to improve your family life.
