Make Your New Year’s Resolution to Stop Using Tobacco

Every year, millions of Americans make New Year’s resolutions to better their health – such as kicking their smoking habit – but, sometimes, have difficulty following through.

According to the American Lung Association, a majority of Americans find it difficult to quit smoking on their first try and often require multiple attempts.

“Quitting smoking is the single most important step a smoker can take to improve the length and quality of his or her life,” said Charles D. Connor, American Lung Association President and CEO. “I encourage all smokers to make a plan to quit this year, talk to your doctor about how to quit smoking and utilize the support and resources available from the American Lung Association.”

Individuals wanting to kick the habit should consider taking medications or other products on the market to help ease the urge. In addition, they get rid of all cigarettes in their home, office and car.

Smokers are also advised to spend more time in places where smoking is not allowed – such health clubs, libraries, and the homes of non-smoking friends. Changing up one’s routine can also make kicking the habit easier. For example, spend less time in environments that can trigger smoking – for instance, having drinks after work.

The “Quitter in You” campaign – sponsored by the American Lung Association and WellPoint – is a website geared towards smokers and non-smokers in the efforts to curb the nation’s smoking habit.

Tools and resources to quit smoking are available for current smokers as well as non-smokers who can help someone else quit smoking.
