Younger and healthier Americans who are wondering if they should invest in a life insurance policy may want to consider the various threats to their well-being that can strike at almost any time. One such example is violent crime.

The FBI’s annual report on crime trends cited a significant increase across many different crime categories. During 2012, there were an estimated 1,214,462 violent crimes reported to law enforcement, including 14,827 murders, 84,376 forcible rapes, 354 robberies and 760,739 aggravated assaults.

Survey by the Bureau of Justice Statistics found that 26 of every 1,000 people experience violent crime; an increase of 15% this year. However, in 1993 crime rates where much higher and have improved over 40% since then.

Still, Americans remain at some degree of risk to become victims of a violent crime at some point, with more than 1.31 million arrests recorded under that category last year.

People can take a number of steps to help lower their risk of becoming a crime victim, from making their home more resistant to intruders to avoiding potentially unsafe places late at night. However, thousands of violent crimes continue to occur nationwide, which is just one more reason to consider protecting loved ones with the right life insurance policy.
